How to Automatically login to Ubuntu? Step By Step

Automatically login to Ubuntu
  1. Open System ▸ Administration ▸ Login Window.
  2. You will be prompted for your password.
  3. Click Security.
  4. Tick Enable Automatic Login.
  5. Choose a Username from the drop down list to login as.
  6. Click Close.
  7. Changes will be applied on re-boot.
Note : Automatic login is highly discouraged because it provides less security for your
system. Also take care when in the Login Settings application as there are options
which may prevent Ubuntu from logging in or starting properly.

I disagree that automatic log on should be discouraged. The amount of security that a user needs depends upon his or her working environment. A single person working in a home environment, like myself, will find that the need to continually enter passwords is annoying and unnecessary. The ability to turn it off is a good feature.
